Stress and PTSD

This article will be focusing on Stress and some facts you need to know about stress. We will also be looking at Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which is another type of mental health issue emanating from stress that people rarely talk about and it, in turn, has a huge impact on someone’s mental well-being.

The meaning of stress

Stress is a natural reaction in which forces from the inside or outside world affect an individual, either one’s emotional or physical well-being, or both. The individual responds to stress in ways that affect the individual, as well as their environment. Due to the overabundance of stress in our modern lives, we usually think of stress as a negative experience, but stress can be a neutral, negative, or positive experience looking at it from a biological point of view. Generally, stress is related to both external and internal factors. External factors include the physical environment, including one’s job, their relationships with others, their home, and all the situations, challenges, difficulties, and expectations individuals are confronted with on a daily basis. Internal factors determine the body’s ability to respond to and deal with, the external stress-inducing factors. Internal factors which influence an individual’s ability to handle stress include their nutritional status, overall health and fitness levels, emotional well-being, and the amount of sleep and rest the individual gets.

Some Facts about Stress.

Stress is a normal part of life that can either help us learn and grow or can cause us significant problems.
Stress releases powerful neurochemicals and hormones that prepare us for action (to fight or flee).

Prolonged, uninterrupted, unexpected, and unmanageable stresses are the most damaging.

Stress can be managed by seeking support from loved ones, regular exercise meditation or other relaxation techniques, structured timeouts, and learning new coping strategies to create predictability in our lives.

Maladaptive ways of coping with stress are using drugs, pain medications, alcohol, smoking, and unhealthy eating habits; would worsen the stress and can make us more reactive to further stress.

Risk factors for unmanageable stress include a lack of adequate social support.

While there are promising treatments for stress, the management of stress is mostly dependent on the ability and willingness of a person to make the changes necessary for a healthy lifestyle.

Stress and PTSD

What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition where people develop a certain set of symptoms following a traumatic event. PTSD can begin immediately after the traumatic event has happened, or it might begin weeks, months or years later. A diagnosis of PTSD is based on someone’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. It is important to remember that a diagnosis is not a label. It is a tool to help professionals decide what type of treatment and support to offer the individual.

Symptoms of PTSD include:

  • Reliving the traumatic event through flashbacks, intrusive thoughts or nightmares.
  • Constantly feeling on edge and alert, experiencing high anxiety or panic attacks.
  • Avoiding feelings or memories of the event by keeping busy or avoiding talking about the event.
  • Not being able to remember the event, through dissociation or feeling physically or emotionally numb.
  • Prevalence of PTSD

It is estimated around 4.4% of the population will fit the criteria for a PTSD diagnosis in any week. It is also difficult to know how common PTSD is, as many people describe it in different ways and many will never receive a formal diagnosis.

Some misconceptions about PTSD

Some people hold unhelpful beliefs about what PTSD means, some assume PTSD only affects people who have been involved in a war. However, any traumatic event can cause PTSD. These include neglect and abuse in childhood, accidents, a violent or sexual attack, harassment or bullying and many more. Some of these inaccurate beliefs prevent people from taking their own or other people’s problems seriously and can stop people getting the help they need and may lead to the loss of friends, family relationships, jobs, homes, and even lives.

How does PTSD affect people’s lives?

The symptoms of PTSD can be extremely difficult to deal with. They find it hard to maintain relationships, to work or even carry out simple day to day tasks. Some people find it so difficult to cope that they self-harm, turn to alcohol or drugs, or take their own lives. People who experience PTSD will often have to deal with symptoms at varying degrees for the rest of their lives. However, there are treatments and coping strategies which can help people to manage their symptoms and live healthy and fulfilling lives.

How to help someone with PTSD

Learn about PTSD: Study about PTSD. This may help you to understand what your friend or family member is going through and help you to feel more confident in offering support, the Mind and Rethink Mental Illness websites might help you to learn more.

Do not be judgemental, be patient: The symptoms of PTSD are very normal human reactions to often tragic events. It may seem like your friend or family member should be ‘moving on’ by now, but they need time and support to heal. Try not to put pressure on them or make assumptions about how they ‘should’ be behaving.

Ask them how you can help. Everybody is different and there is no one way to help someone experiencing PTSD. If you want to support a friend or loved one, one of the best things to do is ask them how.

Give them information about support services: Sometimes the support of friends and family is not enough. Letting them know about the support they can get from the NHS private healthcare or organisations can also be helpful (or any healthcare/organisation where you are based/living). As well as treatment provided by medical professionals, such as psychological therapies and medication, community-based support related to lifestyle, education or social activities can also help someone stay well.

The silent killer

Blood pressure

Blood pressure.
Being a Well Woman includes being physically healthy. That is why I include information about physical health. On of the main silent killers is high blood pressure, so in this article I want to talk about high blood pressure and what you can do to avoid it, cure it or deal with it.

What is blood pressure?

Blood pressure is the force that your blood exerts on the walls of your arteries. When your blood pressure is too high, your heart has to work harder to pump blood around your body. Over time, this can weaken your heart. High blood pressure also places a strain on the walls of your arteries, making a blockage more likely. This means that having high blood pressure is a big problem, because it increases the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

How to measure

There are a few simple steps that you can follow to be sure that you get an accurate reading of your blood pressure.

Take this into consideration when taking your blood pressure:

  1. A lot of factors can affect your blood pressure reading, for example eating a big meal, taking your blood pressure 30 minutes after smoking or taking caffeine.
  2. Do not wear tight-fitting clothes, wear loose-fitting clothes like a short sleeved t-shirt so that you can push your sleeve up comfortably.
  3. Always use the same arm for blood pressure readings, as each arm will give you a slightly different reading.
  4. Before you take your readings, rest for five minutes. You should be sitting down in a quiet place, preferably at a desk or table, with your arm resting on a firm surface and your feet flat on the floor.
  5. Your arm should be relaxed, not tensed.  Make sure your arm is supported and that the cuff around your arm is at the same level as your heart. You may need to support your arm with a cushion to be sure it is at the correct height.
  6. Taking blood pressure at home with your BP monitor.
    1. Put the cuff on following the instructions that came with your monitor.
    2. Make sure you are relaxed and comfortable. If you are anxious or uncomfortable, this will make your blood pressure rise temporarily.
    3. Keep still and silent whenever you are taking your own reading. Moving and talking can affect your reading.
    4. Take two or three readings, each about two minutes apart, and then work out the average. Some people find that their first reading is much higher than the next readings. If this is true for you, keep taking readings until they level out and stop falling, then use this as your reading.
    5. Record your reading, either in the memory of your monitor or on computer or paper.

Keep a record of your readings

Ensure you keep accurate records of your blood pressure – if you don’t keep accurate records of your blood pressure it may affect the treatment you receive.

Do not be worried if you get an unexpected high reading – a one-off reading may be nothing to worry about. Measure your blood pressure again at another time, but if you find that it continues to be high after a period of time, consult your doctor or nurse.

Do not check your blood pressure too often – you may become worried or stressed about small changes in your reading. This can raise your blood pressure in the short-term. Worrying about your blood-pressure reading may actually make it higher.

Be Inspired

A well woman in all dimensions

I was triggered to start off this after I attended an event last Saturday and I am now challenged. It is all about a well woman and being well in all dimensions. We will be looking at what it means to be inspired – The English Dictionary defines Inspire as an ability to give someone the idea for a piece of work, it can also mean arousal of the mind to special unusual activity or creativity, a product of your creative thinking, work and a sudden intuition as part of solving a problem.Have you ever looked up to someone or admired something about another person that really inspired you?  Well, there are certain qualities about a person’s character that enable them to inspire others, and you can also take these steps to awaken those qualities in yourself.

To achieve this, you need to:

Stick With What You Love

I can see the reason why most people succeed is because they do what they are good at not what people push them to do. The moment someone starts doing what they enjoy doing, they will see life and vigour and the ability to shoulder failures and move on is evident, it can be said that the success rate of those who attempt to inspire is incredibly low when the measurement of success is based on the percentage inspired as opposed to the actual number inspired.  Huge motivational seminars with thousands of attendees typically make a real lasting impact in only a few people’s lives.  If you look at those same odds for yourself, you might easily be discouraged if you hope to inspire others by doing something you don’t truly love to do.

If, however, you do love something dearly, you won’t care how successful you are at inspiring others and you will continue to keep at it no matter how many times you fail.  When people doubt you, and when people laugh at your failures, you will continue to do what you love because you love it.  So having love and passion for something will protect you from all potential failures.

Dream Big

Dream bigOnce you establish a foundation for which you have great passion, start dreaming big.  How many people could you potentially inspire based on your niche of expertise?  Are there ways you can expand your impact?  Don’t look to inspire one person, look to inspire hundreds!  Remember, this goes back to the low success rate percentages, as you will likely not succeed with working to inspire at a very small level.  You need to think big and have many people available to inspire.  Fifty people out of a thousand are only five percent, but it’s still fifty people.  Share your ideas with as many people as possible and allow them grow your influence beyond your initial ideas for inspiration.

Dreaming big is not only about inspiring more people, but also about impact.  Don’t settle on making minor changes in a person’s life if they need a total makeover.  Instead, aim to change everything.  Look to inspire in many areas instead of just one.  Think big about the positive impact you might have and this will give you a much better chance of leaving some kind of impression.  If you promote a hundred ways for someone to change or heal and they take on just one, you have still helped them!

Another useful way to inspire others is to support an established noble cause or practice, such as saving the environment or feeding the poor.  Look for the need of the people and see to it, you will gain attention than when you go for course that would give you individual gain or what some might think are more selfish reasons.  An offer to change something that has a positive impact on the global society is far more attractive to onlookers than some short lived, localized venture.  So keep those areas of influence as big as possible.

Talk about your passion

Passion is something you must have and be talk about it if you really want to inspire others.  You can gain a lot of influence just by publically expressing that you are excited and passionate about a topic.  You inspire more people when you are lively and enthusiastic.   Expressive passion is contagious because of the curiosity it stirs in others.  You’ll get people wondering why you love what you love so much.  Naturally, some of them will take the time necessary to understand what it is about the topic that moves you and in so doing you have influenced them.

Practice What You Preach

You need to remain actively involved in the field in which you intend to inspire others.  It’s the age old saying of “practice what you preach,” and it holds true for anyone trying to inspire others.  Ultimately, if you really want to inspire others to do something then that particular thing should be a big part of your life.  You might not necessarily be an expert at it, but your passion and your involvement is what matters.

Be Open to people

You must always maintain an open invitation to everyone you encounter.  Personally welcome others, and listen to their needs. Don’t be a lone ranger, once you are involved with them, keep it personal and always maintain a healthy line of communication. Do not always go to people when you need something from them but be nice to all.

Offer a Guiding Hand / Be a Mentor

The best part of inspiring others is to have interest in not only what you do, but to also recognize your followers and have an opportunity to see them grow and change as well.  Offer to share your personal stories, teach them things you’ve learned along the way, talk about your failures and achievements, and ask questions about their own progress.  Do not allow them to go down the line of struggle you have been. Help them avoid the mistakes you’ve made in the past, and always maintain a positive outlook on their forward progress.

Be Consistent

Consistency in actions, information, and moral standards is also extremely important.  If you constantly change your methods, your interests, and the field in which you hope to inspire others, you will have little success.  People want to see and associate your ideas with a reliable plan that they can follow.  You need to demonstrate this consistency through your actions, but you can also compliment your actions with inspirational story telling.  Story telling allows you to reproduce important past experiences as a means to guide and inspire others.  Remember to use stories that embrace the consistency of your actions.

Remain Positive

The process of inspiring others comes with some challenges.  To get past this, you must remain positive, work past failures, and present optimism openly to others no matter what the circumstances are.  Doubt is a very contagious disease, and if you show any of it, you can easily destroy any positive influence you might have instilled in a person.
